Overall - April 2026:
So - We think The Usual Suspects deserves a bump in score.
Guinness - yep as expected. Not to mention a legit tequila bar with some quality selections for those who appreciate the fine agave spirit!
Wings - The buffalo hot were big, nice and meaty with a bang-on sauce. Not terribly hot though,
The ’Oh Shit’ wings had a bit of a jalapeno flavour that was not much hotter than the hot. We also tried a pound of reaper wings which lived up to their namesake and most of us could only handle one. As usual, what they made up for in heat was traded off in marginal flavour. Nonetheless we had to accept the challenge and try them out.
We like the work they’ve done to the place, it is a lot cosier inside than it used to be. The new table layout may prove to be problematic with our larger group though. They eliminated the long bench-style seating down the middle and turned the booths 90 degrees so they only seat 4 at a time.
The opposite wall has 3 fireplaces and tiny 2-seat booths that would be perfect for a gay date night.
To top it off, they added a pizza oven and prep station in the front corner that takes up almost 20% of their previous dining space that I am not sure was the wisest decision.
On the good side, they added another deck out front to the left of the main entrance so it seems they are hedging their bets on mother nature to provide them with a bountiful patio season. As is, they can seat way more people outdoors than they can fit inside.
It’s a great neighbourhood pub and we look forward to returning soon!
Overall - March 2025:
Formerly the Eager Beaver, there was not much new to report about the recently renamed ’Usual Suspects Cocktails & Grill’. We’re unsure why the name change, but rumour has it some glunts complained about the previous name’s sexual connotations and made them change it? We think it is the same owners and management as before but who’s to speculate? The question is, are they still good?
Well, we’re happy to report the place is still well worthy of BHON patronage! Guinness on tap, good food and portions, and it’s outside the touristy nonsense area of the Falls, so no bullshit tourist taxes or other accompanying crap like that. Just a good bar for regular people to go to! They also have a fairly massive outdoor patio that might make this a happening summer spot to attend.
We had several rounds of Guinness and a couple pounds of the Buffalo hot and ’Oh shit’ wings, which were on sale for $9 a pound on Thursday nights. Decent sized wings, but a little disappointing in consistency. One pound was saucier, while another were a little dry and overcooked. I won’t knock them too much though, as these wings were better than what we have gotten in half the places in the Falls over the past couple years! The only other thing that put us off was the early close for the kitchen that prevented us from ordering more, and the soft-close at 10:00pm seemed a little premature, especially since there were a lot of people still hanging around. We were informed that would soon change with the arrival of their summer hours, so presumably it’s a non-issue going forward.
Do we finally have a new default spot for Niagara Falls? Could The Usual Suspects take that crown? Perhaps so! We’ll be back for sure to find out. |
